Sergio Garcia’s daughter named after 13th hole at Augusta

Sergio Garcia has named his newborn daughter after the hole at Augusta National which provided one of the most pivotal moments of last year’s Masters.

Garcia’s wife, Angela, gave birth to the couple’s first child in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Texas, and the Spaniard proudly announced the arrival of Azalea Adele Garcia – Azalea being the name of the 13th hole at Augusta.

The 38-year-old looked destined to endure another near-miss in a major championship almost a year ago as he trailed Justin Rose by three shots with just six holes to play in the final round.

Rose appeared certain to extend his lead when Garcia pulled his drive into deep trouble to the left of Rae’s Creek at the long 13th and was forced to take a penalty drop for an unplayable lie before knocking his third shot back into play.

The Englishman’s second went just off the back of the green to leave a great chance to get up-and-down for birdie, but Garcia gave himself an opportunity to salvage a par when he clipped a wedge to 10 feet.

Garcia then holed one of the most crucial putts of his career and Rose was unable to convert his birdie putt, and that prompted a huge turnaround in the destiny of the title as Garcia birdied 14 and eagled the next before going on to win at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off.

He married Golf Channel journalist Angela Akins in July, and the couple are now celebrating the birth of their daughter just three weeks before Garcia returns to Augusta to defend his Masters title.

Garcia took part in a teleconference call with the media to preview his Masters defence on Tuesday morning despite already being at the hospital as his wife had gone into labour five days ahead of her due date.
